Would you put a doctor's visit on your grocery list? Whole Foods Market Inc. Co-CEO John Mackey told Bloomberg Business that his company is exploring the idea of adding health clinics to its grocery stores.
The plans aren't yet fully formed, and a Whole Foods (Nasdaq: WFM) spokesperson impressed upon Bloomberg that Mackey's idea is still a far-off brainstorm.
But Mackey sees the addition of health clinics to grocery stores as a weapon in the fight for a better American health care system, one driven by entrepreneurship.
"Health care is so broken in America," Mackey told Bloomberg. "If we allow markets to work, if we allow entrepreneurs to get in here and do things like I'm talking about doing, we will pretty much solve the health-care problem in a generation."
Mackey also told Bloomberg that he's interested in expanding an employee weight loss and nutrition camp, dubbed Total Health Immersion, to customers as a weekend retreat program, indicating that he is already negotiating to buy property in Austin to host the classes.
Whole Foods has multiple DFW locations, including a new store under construction in Uptown Dallas.
