Gordon Food Service opens distribution center

Gordon Food Service, a major Michigan-based food distributor, celebrated the opening of its 420,000-square-foot distribution center at the Findlay Industrial Park not far from the Pittsburgh International Airport.
The company indicated in an announcement that it began shipping out of the facility last month and now employs 200 people and expects to hire another 100 within three to five years.The new facility, one of the largest to open in the Pittsburgh area in years, is one of 16 Michigan-based Gordon Food Services operating throughout the United States. The company also distributes throughout much of Canada, where it operates eight distribution centers.

The company ranks as the 34th-largest private company in the country, with $9.8 billion in annual revenue, according to Forbes magazine. It ranked one spot ahead of O'Hara-based Giant Eagle.Gordon Food Service mostly serves a wholesale customer base in the region but also operates a few retail locations in the Pittsburgh market as well.
