Rob Shimmel started noticing the pattern on Fridays.
He had just started as manager of the Dunkin' Donuts on Route 30 when he noticed customers "paying it forward."
One person would come up to the store's drive-thru window and ask what the cost of the next order was.
Employees started seeing the simple gesture continue. A ripple effect soon emerged.
"I've never experienced anything like it at other locations," he said.
And like clockwork, it continued each Friday.
Two weeks ago, the forwarding method hit an all time high of 32 participants. The only reason it stopped was because there were no more cars in the drive-thru.
"We wanted to keep it going, there was just no more customers," Shimmel said. "My employees did everything they could."
The most expensive order was $9.32.
Giving: As most Yorkers crave coffee to get them through the workday, Shimmel is happy to know a giving spirit exists within the community.
The weekly ritual usually averages anywhere between two to 10 participants. It can start at any time of the day, and when it does, it can remain consistent.
About 12 people are employed at the Dunkin' Donuts at 701 Loucks Road.
Shimmel credits the drive-thru and speed of his workers to the success of the pay-it-forward process that has sprung up over the last year.
"We have a hardworking crew here," he said. "And the best part is they love doing it."
Jessica Weissman, spokeswoman for Dunkin' Donuts, said there is something special about this location.
"It's always good to see people paying it forward," she said.
She says that this type of charity happens around the country. According to published reports, the same things has happened in Massachusetts and New York.
Dunkin' Donuts encourages patrons to help out a stranger when they can.
Shimmel and his employees are already hoping to set a new pay-it-forward record.
He said in order to do keep the streak going, employees have to be excited about it and fast.
