Publix planning $34 million distribution center in McCalla; would bring 200 jobs
The Jefferson County Commission will hold a public hearing on a proposed incentive package at its Sept. 10 meeting to bring the Lakeland, Florida-based supermarket chain to the Jefferson Metropolitan Park in McCalla.
"We're excited about Publix. They're such a great corporate citizen," Commissioner David Carrington said.
The project would require a minimum investment of $34 million. The proposed incentive package is $40,000 in tax abatements every year for 10 years, totaling $400,000.
"When you have 200 new jobs, they're buying homes, they're spending disposable dollars," Carrington said. "We've got to be generating jobs for the entire socioeconomic spectrum of our society."
The average wage for the jobs would be between $35,000 and $40,000 plus benefits, Carrington said.
"They're really good warehouse jobs," Carrington said. "Their benefit package is unbelievable."
Publix currently distributes for the Birmingham area from its Lawrenceville, Georgia. A Publix spokeswoman said the company has no contract in place for a McCalla distribution center.
Carrington said he expects Publix will wait to make the formal announcement until several weeks after the incentive package is voted on.
