Aldi to open eight stores in Southern California on March 24
German budget retailer Aldi announced that it would open eight new supermarket stores in Southern California on March 24. This would be as a part of its plan to open 45 new stores in the region. The first eight stores will be opened in Palm Springs, San Bernardino, Yucaipa, Lake Elsinore, La Quinta, Fontana, Beaumont and Moreno Valley. These areas a located near the company’s regional distribution office in Moreno Valley.
Gordon Nesbit, vice president for Aldi’s Moreno Valley division, said the supermarket will bring quality products to the neighbourhood for an affordable price. Nesbit added that he has been in the region for last three years planning the supermarket’s entry to Southern California. “The driving impetus to coming here is there’s a huge population base not being currently served by Aldi,” he included.
The budget retailer also informed that an additional 19 stores will be opened various locations including Covina, Inglewood, Simi Valley, South Gate and Bakersfield during April and July this year. Every single store expects to have a minimum of 19 employees and the distribution center would have around 100 workers. Aldi is expecting to increase its Southern California workforce to 1,100 people by the end of the year.
Aldi’s stores will be smaller in size, measuring up to 10,000 square feet, contrasted to a normal grocery store which can extend up to 50,000 square feet or more. Majority of products sold at Aldi will be private label, with each category having a minimum of two options to choose from. “It’s a value proposition that the Southern California customer hasn’t seen before,” Nesbit said.
