Easyjet founder opens discount supermarket; threat to Aldi and Lidl
Budget airlines Easyjet founder has launched a new discount supermarket, which according to analyst, would cause major problems for German stalwarts Aldi and Lidl. The founder of the British budget airline Easyjet has opened its first discount store which sells everyday groceries for 25p each. Stelios Haji-Ioannou, a British entrepreneur of Greek-Cypriot origin, opened first store of his supermarket brand Easy Foodstore in the London suburb of Park Royal. According to the early shoppers many of its products are selling even cheaper than the cheapest supplier Lidl and Aldi.
Around 80 products were sold for 25 pence (36 cents), including in particular pasta, potatoes, canned goods and spices. Prices could be raised slightly in March, but will still remain very low, said Haji-Ioannou. Haji-Ioannou will generally offer better prices than Aldi and Lidl, which are the best stores in the United Kingdom. The two German chains operates in UK for about 20 years and a market share of nearly ten percent have conquered.
Haji-Ioannou founded the budget airlines Easyjet in1995. The company now has nearly 60 brands – from the budget hotel Easy to gyms Easygym. Haji-Ioannou and his family still hold more than a third of the capital of Easyjet. Haji-Ioannou, son of a wealthy Greek shipowner sparked a revolution in aviation with Easyjet.
