The West Des Moines, Iowa, retailer set a goal for 100% responsibly sourced seafood by the end of 2015 in 2011. Hy-Vee said it achieved that goal in December.
Hy-Vee partnered with environmental non-profit FishWise to meet its goal. Changes included shifting to fresh and private label farmed salmon rated yellow or green by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, as well as working with shrimp farmers to make improvements.
“When you purchase Hy-Vee seafood, you are supporting best practices that will help ensure a healthy supply of seafood for generations to come,” Greg Frampton, Hy-Vee’s VP of meat and seafood operations, said in a press release. “Hy-Vee’s sustainability mission is to protect ocean resources and do business in a manner that promotes the well-being of our customers, employees, communities and the global environment.”
Hy-Vee plans to add shelf-stable tuna and sushi to its Responsible Choice Seafood Program in 2016.
