Natural Grocers, an organic and natural foods store, opens its first Iowa location Tuesday morning, in Clive.
The 14,000-square-foot store is located in the parking lot of the former Dahl's grocery store at 86th Street and Hickman Road.
Denver-based Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage has 110 stores across the country that offer certified organic produce, and other organic and natural products. The store features a mix of national brands and locally grown, raised and manufactured products, said Sarah Edward, marketing event coordinator.
Features of the new store include:
- A fresh produce selection, with exotic items such as Romanesco, a prickly looking broccoli, and rainbow carrots, along with the basics like apples, potatoes, bananas, lemons, lettuce, avocados and other items.
- Organic and natural products aimed at paleo, gluten-free, vegan and allergy-aware diets. Dairy, meat, frozen and general groceries sections all have organic or natural selections.
- Natural cleaning products and items for the home and kitchen, including 100 percent recycled aluminum foil and compostable single-use plates and flatware.
- Organic pet food, and natural health and beauty products, including deodorant, make
- A grab-and-go section that includes salads, sandwiches, hummus, guacamole, burritos, flaxseed blueberry muffins, and other items that can be heated and eaten.
- About 7,500 supplements and vitamins.
Shoppers must either bring their own grocery bags, buy a reusable bag for 99 cents at the store, or pack their groceries into boxes provided near the check
The store also has a kitchen for free cooking demonstrations and educational seminars given by the store's certified nutritional coach. Customers who attend four seminars are given a $10 gift card.
Natural Grocers is joining a growing specialty grocery market in the Des Moines area. The Fresh Market opened in West Des Moines in October, and Fresh Thyme Farmers Market is expected to open there soon. They join Whole Foods, Gateway Market, Trader Joe's, Campbell's Nutrition, and a growing selection of natural and organic sections in traditional supermarkets like Hy-Vee and Fareway.
Natural Grocers will hold a grand opening at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday. The first 60 people in line will get gift cards worth $5, $10, $25, $50 or $100 that will be revealed at check
The store’s regular hours are 8 a.m. to 9:04 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 7:35 p.m. Sunday.
