No cigarettes will be sold at Price Chopper's new Market 32 supermarkets

 Updated
Price Chopper will not be selling cigarettes at its new Market 32 supermarkets, a major step for the chain at a time when retailers such as CVS have pulled tobacco from their shelves.
Cigarettes will continue to be sold at Price Chopper stores, but will be phased out over the next eight to 10 years as the chain converts all 135 stores in six states to Market 32.Jerry Golub, CEO of the Golub Corp. in Schenectady, New York, said cigarettes do not fit in with the health-conscious identity the company wants to build at Market 32.

Golub declined to say how much the chain would lose in sales, but said any losses would be "more than made up for" by having brand cohesion in all Market 32 stores."It's about creating a brand and experience," Golub said during a tour today of the nearly-finished Market 32 in Wilton near Saratoga Springs. "One ideal is health and wellness. We couldn't ignore the obvious conflict that tobacco products have with that vision."
Besides Wilton, the Price Chopper in Clifton Park also is being converted to Market 32 and will be finished soon. The company also will convert stores on Madison Avenue and Delaware Avenue in Albany to Market 32 in about six months.
Other Market 32 stores are being built from the ground up, including one in Fort Edward in Washington County and another in Sutton, Massachusetts.
The layout and overall presentation of the stores are a big departure from traditional Price Chopper stores. They have contemporary earth-tone colors, a wider selection of items such as cheeses and olive oils and more attractive product displays.
"It's a completely different look, feel and presentation," Golub said.
