Imports of Fair Trade-certified fruits and vegetables increased 26% in 2014.
Volumes increased from 155 million to 195 million pounds, according to a news release from Fair Trade USA, a third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in North America.
In 2014, the organization’s Produce and Floral category had its best year ever. More than 25 different fruits and vegetables are now certified by Fair Trade USA, including strawberries, asparagus, melons, eggplant, peaches, tomatoes, peas, green beans, squash and mini-carrots.
Fourteen new producer organizations were certified this year, bringing the total to 64 growers in nine different countries.
Mexico played a big role in the big volume increase in 2014. More than 63 million pounds of Fair Produce produce was exported to the U.S. last year, 344% more than in 2012.
Whole Foods Market buys about 75% of all Fair Trade-certified produce exported to the U.S. Other retailers that sell Fair Trade include Costco, Sam’s Club, Safeway, Earth Fare, Haggen and many natural foods stores.
