Burris Logistics announced plans this week to build a new warehouse in Georgia, its 18th location on the East Coast.
The Milford-based perishable food distribution and warehousing company recently purchased a 55-acre property in McDonough roughly the size of Middletown about 30 miles south of downtown Atlanta. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Company officials say they plan to soon begin construction of a 250,000-square-foot, refrigerated warehouse and attached office on the site that will employ 75 workers once finished in early 2018.
"Burris continues to evolve to meet the needs of our current and potential clients," CEO Donnie Burris said in a release. "Our expansion into the Greater Atlanta region highlights the growth, popularity and diversification we are experiencing throughout our entire operation."
Founded in 1925, Burris Logistics began as a father-and-son operation that shipped tomatoes from the Delmarva Peninsula to Philadelphia and then carried bread to local Acme Markets on the return trip. Now a fifth generation, family-owned company, Burris operates four business segments, including custom retail distribution, foodservice redistribution, refrigerated warehouses and freight management.
The company currently employs 1,800 in eight states from Massachusetts to Florida, including 300 spread across its headquarters in Milford and storage facilities in New Castle and Harrington that serve Acme Markets and Fresh Market, among other customers. A 222,000-square-foot refrigerated warehouse in Elkton, Maryland, also supports BJ's Wholesale Club.
The new McDonough warehouse will be Burris Logistics second site in Georgia. The company has leased a 264,000-square-foot facility in Atlanta since 2007.
