March 9 (SeeNews) - US organic foods retailer Whole Foods Market Inc (NASDAQ:WFM) intends to install up to 100 additional solar rooftop systems on its stores in partnership with NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) and SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ:SCTY).
The plans, which could increase the company's solar portfolio by up to 400%, are part of efforts to increase support for renewable energy and also to lower energy costs, Whole Foods said on Tuesday.
In a separate statement, NRG said it would provide rooftop solar arrays for up to 84 Whole Foods stores and distribution centers across nine states. The installations could have combined capacity of up to 13.8 MW. NRG noted that when executed, the Whole Foods project portfolio was expected to be funded in part through its partnership with NRG Yield.
SolarCity said it expected to start installation this spring of solar systems for stores in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.
