Tampa Bay's newest grocers ramp up hiring
Two grocers with large national expansion plans are ramping up hiring in the Tampa Bay region.
German discount grocer Aldi and Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. (NASDAQ: SFM) will both host hiring events in Tampa on Wednesday.
Aldi plans to hire 80 people to support existing stores in Bradenton, Lakeland, Oldsmar, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg and Tampa. Sprouts, which will open its first Florida store on Feb. 22 at 15110 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Carrollwood, is hiring 150 people.
Sprouts has confirmed the Carrollwood store as well as locations in South Tampa, Palm Harbor and Sarasota, all of which will open in 2017.
The Tampa Bay region has been inundated with new grocer concepts in recent years as more companies move into the home turf of Lakeland-based PublixSuper Markets Inc. Publix employs more than 35,000 people in the Tampa Bay region, including its Lakeland corporate headquarters.
A Sprouts store typically employs 134 people, a spokeswoman said, but because Florida is a new market for the company, it plans to train additional new employees during the first opening.
The Sprouts hiring event will be held from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hilton Tampa Airport.
Aldi will host its event at the store at 14933 N. Florida Ave. from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday.
