Who Are C-Store Industry’s Largest Private Companies?

Retailers, distributors, suppliers populate annual Forbes list

NEW YORK --
 For the convenience-store and gas-station industry, Pilot Flying J topped the Forbes magazine’s list of America’s Largest Private Companies for 2015. At No. 8, the Knoxville, Tenn.-based company was the only industry representative to occupy the top 10.
In all, 15 privately owned retail companies made the list, representing convenience stores, gas stations and travel centers, as well as grocers with a significant gas station or c-store presence. Most are listed in CSP's Convenience Top 101.

  • Pilot Flying J Inc., Knoxville, Tenn. (No. 8), with revenues of $30.96 billion and 26,000 employees.
  • Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc., Oklahoma City (No. 14), with revenues of $22.2 billion and 12,000 employees.
  • Cumberland Gulf Group, Framingham, Mass. (No. 18), with revenues of $15.8 billion and 76,000 employees.
  • Meijer Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich. (No. 19), with revenues of $15.8 billion and 76.000 employees.
  • QuikTrip Corp., Tulsa, Okla. (No. 28), with revenues of $11 billion and 19,800 employees.
  • Wawa Inc., Wawa, Pa. (No. 34), with revenues of $9.7 billion and 22,500 employees.
  • Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh (No. 36), with revenues of $9.5 billion and 34,000 employees.
  • RaceTrac Petroleum Inc., Atlanta (No. 38), with revenues of $9 billion and 6,900 employees.
  • Hy-Vee, West Des Moines, Iowa (No. 40), with revenues of $8.7 billion and 78,000 employees.
  • Sinclair Oil Corp., North Salt Lake City, Utah (No. 50), with revenues of $7 billion and 7,000 employees.
  • Sheetz Inc., Altoona, Pa. (No. 59), with revenues of $6.3 billion and 14,500 employees.
  • Holiday Cos., Bloomington, Minn. (No. 106), with revenues of $4 billion and 6,000 employees.
  • Houchens Industries, Bowling Green, Ky. (No. 140), with revenues of $3.2 billion and 17,000 employees.
  • Red Apple Group, New York (No. 156), with revenues of $3 billion and 8,000 employees.
  • Kum & Go LC, West Des Moines, Iowa (No. 163), with revenues of $2.8 billion and 4,700 employees.
