Wawa is coming to D.C., though where remains a mystery
Wawa Inc., the immensely popular eastern Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain, has eyes for the District.
Exactly where, it appears, is still to be determined, but a Wawa spokeswoman indicated that the first D.C. store will feature a unique design created specifically for the nation's capital. It is unclear whether it will offer gas, or if there will be more than one.
Wawa will host an event at the Newseum on June 13 "for the real estate and development community and local officials where we will unveil our plans for the first Wawa store in Washington, D.C., including a special design, store location, renderings, with remarks from Wawa leadership and more," company spokeswoman Lori Bruce said in an email.
Prince of Petworth first reported the news, via a tipster who supplied the website with a flyer announcing the Newseum event.
Wawa has proliferated in the suburbs, opening its first Fairfax County store in Chantilly, building its first Loudoun store in Sterling (opening this summer) and adding to its slate of stores in Prince William County. It also operates stores in Capitol Heights, Beltsville and along the Route 301 in Maryland.
But its fans — many of whom originally hail from the Philadelphia suburbs, this reporter included — have long waited for the world's most prolific hoagie producer to move closer to the D.C., if not enter the District proper.
At the same time, Wawa competitor Sheetz is adding to its suburban portfolio, especially in Prince William, where it and Wawa now operate stores on Caton Hill Road within half of a mile of each other. And in Loudoun, Sheetz is expected to build a store on Route 606, less than 1 mile from another Wawa location.
