Idaho-based WinCo Foods has big plans for North Texas.

That’s big enough to supply between 25 and 35 stores, depending on each store’s volumes, said spokesman Dave Butler.

When the Idaho-based grocer said it was coming into the already crowded Dallas-Fort Worth market, some analysts wondered why. But WinCo said at the time that Dallas-Fort Worth was a fast-growing region and it saw a place in neighborhoods for its version of a supermarket. So far, it’s been gaining market share.

WinCo’s high-volume, 95,000-square-foot stores sell $1.5 million worth of inventory a week — above the industry average.
Two new stores are in the works.
  • WinCo’s eighth local store will open in Denton in the Rayzor Ranch shopping center at Interstate 35 and University Drive on July 28.
  • Another WinCo is planned for Arlington at the southwest corner of Interstate 20 and Cooper. Each store has a staff of about 115 to 130. Butler didn’t have firm construction dates, but the Arlington store is expected to open in 2016.

WinCo’s real estate staff is actively searching the region for new store sites, he said. WinCo operates large stores and brands itself as “the supermarket low price leader.”
Each store is charged with monitoring the competition weekly on prices, and sometimes shelf labels will make comparisons to prices at Wal-Mart and other nearby food stores.
WinCo Foods opened its first Texas stores in 2014 with locations in McKinney and Fort Worth. Five more have opened in Duncanville, Lewisville, North Richland Hills, Garland and Fort Worth (second store).
WinCo has four other distribution centers in Boise, Idaho, where it’s based, Modesto, Calif., Woodburn, Ore., and Phoenix. The distribution center will open with about 165 employees and can increase to a staff of 250 to 300 as more retail stores open.
WinCo operates 107 stores in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.
