Revealed: Wegmans' fourth Triangle location
Wegmans Food Markets has confirmed plans for its fourth store in the Triangle as the New York-based grocery chain prepares for an all-out march into North Carolina for the first time.
A new plan recently filed in the town of Cary shows that Wegmans will anchor a new retail development project called Twin Lakes Center. The property is located at the southeast corner of the intersection of Davis Drive and Airport Boulevard in Cary, about a mile south of the border with Research Triangle Park. Not only is the site near the Triangle’s largest employment center – it's within a west Cary submarket that’s among the fastest growing residential areas in the region.
Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale confirms that the company has signed a letter of intent with New York-based real estate development firm Leyland Alliance, which sources say has a contract to buy the targeted 34-acre site.
“We are working through lease negotiations with Leyland Twin Lakes LLC and hope to reach a final agreement by the end of 2016,” Natale says.
The store in Twin Lakes Center is in addition to three other planned Wegmans-anchored retail centers announced earlier this year in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and at Cary Towne Boulevard in Cary. “Wegmans is also considering other sites in the Raleigh-Durham market,” she says, “but until there are firm deals for each site, we are unable to share the locations or other details.”
A typical Wegmans store is about 120,000 to 130,000 square feet, usually with its own restaurant inside, and employs more than 300 people.
Site plans for the first phase of Twin Lakes Center show the project is slated to have five buildings with a total 173,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space – if it is approved as it was originally filed on Oct. 26. A second phase of Twin Lakes Center, which would require a separate site plan application, could include 12 acres of additional retail and a possible residential component with views and access to Hatch Pond.
Jason Hess of Leyland Alliance, who is listed the developer contact for Twin Lakes Center, says they are excited about the project. He was unable to give to any specific timeline for the project. “It all depends on how busy they (Wegmans) are,” he says. “... [We] look forward to working with the town and the community with this project.”
McAdams Co. of Durham is listed as the engineering firm on record for Twin Lakes Center.
