Amazon has declared war on supermarkets by offering doorstep deliveries of bargain groceries in less than an hour.
The online giant has matched the cost of 33 out of 44 products offered by rivals.
Research by trade magazine The Grocer found items from butter and cheese to yoghurt and ice cream were cheaper than at Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons while the e-tailer was able to match the chains on milk, pizza, fish and peas.
Amongst the biggest savings were Lurpak Spreadable butter (500g) which was £1.80 at Amazon , compared with £3.25 at the Big Four.
A litre of Tropicana Orange Juice was £1.50 online and at Asda while shoppers at Tesco and Morrisons splashed out £2.48 and £2.50 at Sainsbury’s.

The Grocer said: “Amazon’s closest competitor on price was Asda.”
Based on items stocked in all the stores, it found Morrisons 15.5% dearer than Amazon, the Sainsbury’s 14% more, Tesco 8% higher and Asda 6.2% more.
Supermarkets v Amazon
The survey comes as Amazon unveiled a pilot scheme for chilled and frozen food delivery in Birmingham for its Prime Now members.
With delivery slots available within an hour of ordering for £6.99 or free delivery for shoppers prepared to wait two hours, Amazon is planning to extend the range and reach of the service.
Prime Now costs £79 a year and provides free same day delivery with a two hour wait. There is £6.99 charge to deliver shopping within an hour.
In a statement Amazon said: “Prime Now customers already benefit from ultra-fast delivery on everything from essentials to products includinG the latest video games and devices.
“We are excited to add a range of chilled and frozen items as we expand the variety of products that can be ordered for delivery within 60 minutes.”
And there’s more good news for families - the cost of veg has plummeted as Asdaslugs it out with discounter Aldi.
The supermarket slashed the cost of carrots from 60p to 49p per kg, cabbage from 58p to 49p and four baking potatoes from £1 to 85p.
Aldi hit back by cutting 1kg of Baby Maris Piper Potatoes from 89p to 39p. Carrots and cabbage also fell.
