Grocery Outlet Bargain Market said Tuesday it is launching a recruitment website for people interested in licensing and operating their own stores.
Grocery Outlet, Emeryville, Calif., has 234 store in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Pennsylvania — with an additional store scheduled to open Thursday in Southern California — of which all but 15 are licensed. There are three corporate stores in Northern California and 12 in Pennsylvania.
The website — located at www.ownagroceryoutlet.com — provides resources on all facets of the licensing process, the company said, including how the model works, investment requirements, earning potential, available territories, an initial application and testimonials from current independent operators.
There is an unprecedented increase in demand by consumers for discounted products, and Grocery Outlet Bargain Market is widely recognized as a great brand," said MacGregor Read, co-CEO of the extreme value chain. "There is no better time for quality candidates with a strong history of management and ownership to take advantage of this opportunity to become an independent operator.”
The company said in a press release it offers national brands at prices up to 60% lower than traditional supermarkets, with buyers negotiating directly with manufacturers for overstocks and surplus products.
On the website, Read says, “Under our business model, we purchase all the merchandise and consign it to your store. You manage your own team of employees to operate the store, select the consigned merchandise from our inventory guides and sell the consigned merchandise to your customers.
“We build out the stores and continuously stock them with fresh inventory on consignment that each operator has the opportunity to select. You hire, train, and lead your team, doing what you do best, and then we share the profits according to our commission structure.
“We each assume different risks but share the rewards."
Grocery Outlet acquired Amelia’s Grocery Outlet stores in Pennsylvania in 2012, Read pointed out, “[and] we don’t plan on hitting the brakes anytime soon. It’s no secret that we have plans to expand aggressively throughout our current footprint in five western states and the Mid-Atlantic region.”
The company has already announced it will enter the Southern California market by acquiring some of the Fresh & Easy locations, with plans for 14 stores in the Greater Los Angeles area over the next few months.
Overall sales for 2015 are estimated to be approximately $1.7 billion, and the company said it expects to double or triple its volume over the next decade.
